【Forwarded Message】DCSE Summer Course on AI and Robotics 2024

Topic: Smart City Development to Support Sustainable Cities & Communities

Background:

In the current landscape of rapid technological advancement and global sustainability challenges, the concept of Smart Cities has emerged as a pivotal solution for addressing urban complexities. A Smart City utilizes advanced technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics, to enhance urban living standards, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability. In Indonesia, including at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), there is a concerted effort to integrate these technologies into Smart City frameworks, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 11, which aims to establish sustainable cities and communities. AI and robotics play pivotal roles in optimizing transportation systems, waste management, energy efficiency, and public service delivery within these frameworks.

The adoption of Smart City technologies not only impacts urban infrastructure but also yields significant social, economic, and environmental benefits. Socially, these initiatives promote inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring equitable technological access for all residents, including marginalized groups. Economically, Smart City initiatives stimulate local economic growth through job creation and investment attraction. Environmentally, they contribute to reducing carbon footprints, improving waste management, and optimizing resource utilization. While challenges exist, the development of Smart Cities in Indonesia presents opportunities for innovation, research, and collaborative partnerships among universities, industries, and governments to tailor solutions to local contexts.
